John Walter Burroughs Jr.

John Walter Burroughs Jr. of Sugar Pine died Wednesday at his home. He was 56.

He was born in Alameda and had lived in Sugar Pine for 11 years.

He worked as a stockbroker for 30 years for Smith Barney.

His family said he loved the outdoors, especially fly fishing and backpacking. He was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Sugar Pine.

Mr. Burroughs is survived by his wife, Donna Burroughs of Sugar Pine; three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Kent Steele of Pleasanton, and Jennifer and Bob Broxham and Heidi and Tim Sledge, all of Dublin; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Carla and Ron Weeks of Fort Lewis, Wash., Kimberly and Dan Cottrell of Houston, and Katherine and Ford Adkins of Trinity, Texas; his parents, Jack and Dorothy Burroughs of Jamestown; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Edelgard Burroughs of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Al Farley of Carson City, Nev.; stepsisters, Debi Drake of Jamestown and Diane Martin and Gina Drake, both of Chico; a sister-in-law, Nancy Cannon of San Jose; in-laws, Ray and Naomi Shafer of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Ryan, Alysha, Sara, Jonathan and Andrew Steele, Zachary and Hayley Broxham, R.J. and Ashley Weeks, Courtney and Brittany Cottrell, and Austin and Chase Adkins; nephews, Michael Cannon of San Jose, Norm Burroughs of Danville, John Burroughs of Mesa, Ariz., Jim and Jeff Farley, both of Reno, Nev., and Clint and Cole Martin, both of Chico; a niece, Kelly Martin of Chico; and close friends, Greg and Kristin Burns and Sam and Emma Burns, all of Tuolumne.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne Gay Burroughs.
